Individual Consultations
Arts Academic Language and Learning Unit offer one-to-one (individual) teaching on the following areas of study and writing:
- Understanding essay questions
- Locating and evaluating sources
- Reading
- Planning drafts
- Structure and expression (academic style)
- Avoiding plagiarism
- referencing
In an individual consultation (drop-in or by appointment)
- we can read your work to give you feedback on your approach, and language;
- we can discuss your topic, and the expectations for your assignment and course;
- we can discuss strategies for more effective academic writing;
- we can advise you on effective study techniques and practices.
We do not "edit" or "proof-read" your assignment.
If you are a postgraduate student who requires a proof-reading service for longer research papers, ask us about our list of contacts who may be available for proofreading on a fee-for-service basis. Proofreading is not recommended for undergraduate students with short coursework essays.
Please note: Individual appointments are limited in availability.
Post-graduate research and coursework students, undergraduate students with identified needs, and/or referral from lecturer or tutor will be given priority.
Students are usually limted to one (1) consultation per week and staff may restrict the number of consultations a student can attend per semester to ensure equal access to Language and Learning for all students. If you are unsure whether you can access an individual consultation, please attend a drop in session to discuss.
Individual consultations are generally from 30 to 45 minutes.
It is preferable that you bring only sections and/or parts and/or outlines of longer essays (3,000 words +) for discussion in a consultation. As stated above, we do not proofread essays or assignments. While we are very happy to read, and encourage you to bring your assignment drafts, you should not expect us to read all of an assignment during your consultation.
To make an appointment, please contact us by email or phone. Only one consultation can be booked at a time, and all appointments should be made at least three (3) days in advance. It is a good idea, if you are emailing, to suggest a preferred campus, day and time for the appointment:
