Overview of Accounts at Monash
Your overall computer account is tracked in a system call CRUX and is comprised of information about you such as your staff or student number, your department/school/area and your name as well as information about individual computer system accounts that you have (such as Novell, MMS, Authcate, SNG and so on - these will all be explained soon).
At Monash there are basically two categories of computer accounts - Staff and Student
Student accounts give students access to various facilities that they need (such as email for example). This site is primarily to provide information for staff members within the Faculty of Arts. Staff Accounts
Almost all staff who want to use computer services at Monash will need an Authcate and a Novell account. To obtain these accounts, see New/Extended Accounts.
There are a number of different accounts available for Monash staff:
Novell
This account controls access to most staff machines that are on-campus. It provides the following services: Access to network printers in your area Access to shared network space in your area (V-drive) Access to your own personal network storage space (U-drive) Distribution of common software applications to your desktop
Authcate
This account gives the user access to websites outside of Monash and is also used to gain access to "Monash only" resources (such as certain Library databases). A number of other accounts use the Authcate username and password; including email , calendar and modem accounts. Access to the my.monash portal and Staff E-services pages are also via the Authcate username and password.
This account allows the user to send and receive email .
Calendar
Users will normally have a Calendar account by default as well. It is mainly used to schedule and check meetings and events and availability of people and venues for these meetings and events.
Modem Account
Modem accounts are required in order for users to be able to dial in to the Monash modem pool to gain access to the Monash site and the Internet in general. It should be noted though, that Monash does not provide a broadband service.
Other Computer Accounts
There are a number of other special accounts that do not use the Authcate username and password. The username will normally be the same but they have their own password. There accounts usually require special authorisation and/or training. You usually request to these other accounts through your area or school's Admin Officer.

There are 2 main types of accounts available for Monash staff:
Authcate
This account gives the user access to external websites and certain Monash protected IT Services, some of which include:
- E-mail (Monash Messaging System)
- External Web Site Access
- Modem Access from home
- Monash Calendar
- Library Services on the Intranet
- The my.monash portal
- Staff E-services
Novell
This account controls access to most staff machines that are on-campus. It provides the following services:
- Access to shared network drives in your area (V-drive)
- Access to your own personal network storage space (U-Drive)
- Access to network printers in your area
- Distribution of common software applications to your desktop
Almost all staff who want to use computer services at Monash will need an Authcate and a Novell account. To obtain these accounts, a Request for Computer Access form needs to be filled out and signed by Head of Department.
Other Computer Accounts
Some staff members will also need other accounts, requiring special authorisation and/or training. You can request other accounts as well through your area or school's Admin Officer. Other accounts that can be requested are -
