Do I qualify to get a computer account?
To qualify to get Faculty of Arts staff computer accounts, you simply need to have either -
- a Monash staff ID number corresponding to a current staff appointment within the Faculty of Arts or
- a current ID number corresponding to Visitor or Honorary Research Associate status within Arts
(although there are a couple of exceptions to this mentioned further down).
This covers people such as -
- Academic staff
- Contract lecturers and fixed term appointment staff
- General staff
- Casual staff
- (Paid) research staff
- Sessional tutors
- Honorary Research Associates
- Official Visitors
In the process of creating a staff account, the system will at a particular point ask for a current ID number. If we don't have a number to give it, it simply won't proceed past this point. The number cannot be someone else's number and it cannot be a student number. It also has to be current - the system will know if it isn't!
Exceptions
If you are a student, it may be that your school wants you to be able to use their staff network printers and possibly have access to their shared network drive area. If that's the case, we can set up a Novell account only and put your student number against that. There will not be a staff authcate account nor a staff email account associated with this (but you already have a student authcate and email account anyway).
It is also possible to set up what is known as a "role" account. Role accounts are for situations where there is a designated ongoing role or position that may be shared by a few people simultaneously or a series of people over time (or some combination of these two). An account is created and marked so that it goes on indefinitely even if the id number against it expires (the id number used will be that of another staff member who is responsible for the account). Because it is ongoing, the email address will be constant and continuous. This is handy as the email address can then be used in handbooks, letterheads, business cards etc without the fear that it will change making the letterhead, cards etc out of date.
If your primary appointment is with some other faculty or department but you have some connection with a Faculty of Arts area, we can still get you into the Arts picture in a (less than ideal) way. You can be included on Arts staff mailing lists and gain access to network printing and shared drives associated with the area you have a connection with (if that area and you desire that). However, you won't have an Arts staff style email address (John.Smith@arts.monash.edu.au) because you'll already have a primary email address corresponding to some other faculty or area. Still, the access that we can set up for you should meet your requirements.
