Julian Gardner - professional profile
Julian Gardner has been involved for over 30 years with human rights and social justice. He was involved in establishing Australia’s first community legal centre – the Fitzroy Legal Service, was the first Director of Legal Aid in Victoria, and has been the CEO of tribunals dealing to a greater or lesser extent with health issues, namely the Victorian Workcare Appeals Board, the National Social Security Appeals Tribunal and the Victorian Mental Health Review Board.
As the Public Advocate for Victoria from 2000-07, he lead high profile cases that changed health law and involved complex ethical end of life issues. During that time he was the Chair of the Respecting Patient Choices Ethico-legal Committee. He was a member of the NHMRC Working Group that developed ethical guidelines for the management of post-coma unresponsiveness which were made public in June 2008.
Julian is now a consultant. His report with recommendations for major changes to the Victorian Equal Opportunity Act lead to new legislation this year. He is chair of an Expert Advisory Group concerning the Government's review of the Victorian Mental Health Act and is the Chair of the National Reference Group of the Respecting Patient Choices Program. Currently he leading an inquiry into the mental health and wellbeing of children and young people in Western Australia. He is a director on the Board of Alfred Health.
