When successfully completed, students should have acquired the skills to frame a topic for a sustained essay; survey the literature relevant to their chosen topic; read critically the key works relevant to their chosen topic; write a sustained essay in which they present the outcome of their reading and defend their conclusions on the basis of an assessment of what they have read.
