Dr Michael Selgelid
Director, Centre for Human Bioethics
Editor, Monash Bioethics ReviewDr Michael Selgelid is Director of the Centre for Human Bioethics. He joined the Centre as a staff member in 2011, and was a visiting PhD student in 2000. He is part of both the undergraduate and postgraduate bioethics teaching programs. Michael is also Director of a World Health Organization (WHO) Collaborating Centre for Bioethics at The Australian National University, where he is a Part-Time Fellow in the School of Philosophy, Research School of Social Sciences. He serves on the Ethics Review Board of, and is involved in an Ethics Consultation Project with, Médecins Sans Frontières. His research focus is public health ethics—with emphasis on ethical issues associated with biotechnology and infectious disease. He has over 100 publications in bioethics. He co-authored Ethical and Philosophical Consideration of the Dual-Use Dilemma in the Biological Sciences (Springer 2008) and co-edited Ethics and Security Aspects of Infectious Disease Control: Interdisciplinary Perspectives (Ashgate 2012, in press); Emergency Ethics (Ashgate 2012, in press); Infectious Disease Ethics (Springer 2011); Health Rights (Ashgate 2010); and Ethics and Infectious Disease (Blackwell, 2006). He edits a book series in Public Health Ethics Analysis for Springer and a book series in Practical Ethics and Public Policy for ANU E Press. Michael earned a BS in Biomedical Engineering from Duke University and a PhD in Philosophy from the University of California, San Diego.

Assoc. Prof. Justin Oakley

Editor, Monash Bioethics ReviewAssoc. Prof. Justin Oakley is the author of Morality and the Emotions, and Virtue Ethics and Professional Roles (with Dean Cocking) as well as articles in scholarly journals. He joined the Centre in 1990 and has primary responsibility for the teaching of the Master of Bioethics course. Justin's main research interests are in the areas of ethical theory and professional roles, ethical issues in patient care, ethics of clinical trials, surrogacy, virtue ethics and its applications, and the connection between moral psychology and ethical theory.

Dr Peter Douglas
Sessional Lecturer
Dr Peter Douglas has lectured and tutored in both the Master of Bioethics program and the undergraduate minor in Bioethics since 2009. His research interests include bioethics, phenomenology and neuroscience, and philosophy of nature.

Dr Paul Biegler
ARC Postdoctoral Fellow
Dr Paul Biegler is a Postdoctoral Fellow and Lead Investigator on the Australian Research Council Discovery Project 'Implicit persuasion in pharmaceutical marketing: ethical implications for regulators and consumers'. Paul's earlier research focused on end-of-life decision-making in healthcare, in particular, the ethics of advance directives, competence assessment and Do-Not-Resuscitate orders. His doctorate examined the moral distinctions between pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy in the treatment of depression. It forms the basis for a book, The ethical treatment of depression: autonomy through psychotherapy. Cambridge, MA: MIT Press (forthcoming, 2011)
His research interests include neuroethics, medical ethics, philosophical psychology, philosophy of emotion and the role of emotion in decision-making. Paul practised clinical medicine for 20 years, the last decade as a specialist in emergency medicine.

Associate Professor Helga Kuhse
Associate Professor Helga Kuhse was appointed in 1981 as the University's (and Australia's) first research fellow in bioethics. She was Director of the Centre for Human Bioethics until June 1999. She is the author, co-author, editor or co-editor of 15 books, including Caring: Nurses, Women and Ethics, The Sanctity of Life Doctrine in Medicine: A Critique, Willing to Listen - Wanting to Die, A Companion to Bioethics, Bioethics: An Anthology (1st and 2nd edititions) and has published numerous articles in scholarly journals.
