This unit will explore the patterns of Islamic and Middle Eastern politics through the thematic lens of civil and international conflict and attempts at its resolution. The view of the Middle East as an exceptionally “troubled region” is based on the recurrence of conflicts both within and between states. Indeed, the region has been the focus of intense international efforts, with varying degrees of success, at resolving conflict. This unit will explore and evaluate these efforts at conflict resolution in the Middle East, highlighting how a variety of formal and informal conflict resolution mechanisms have been employed with varying degrees of success. Specific focus will be on the employment of Islam and Islamic political and social mechanisms as tools for conflict resolution. A series of case studies will be coupled with a detailed examination of both the theoretical and practical underpinnings of conflict resolution to evaluate current and alternative trends at the resolution of conflict in the Middle East.
