Dr Lijian Hong
Senior Lecturer
After graduating from Wuhan University in Central China, he worked as a research fellow at the Institute of Political Science, Sichuan Academy of Social Sciences, China. Before coming to Australia, his research interests were mainly in the political reforms in China, the former Soviet Union and East European countries. He has published several articles and translated several books and articles on the topics.
He completed his PhD research on Chinese discussions of the Asiatic mode of production at the Australian National University in 1991. Since then, while teaching advanced Chinese subjects at Monash, he has been focusing his research on the central-local relations in post-Mao China. He has won a three-year ARC large grant (1992-1995) with Professor Bruce Jacobs on this topic and a three-year ARC small grant (1998-2000) with Associate Professor Jianfu Chen of La Trobe University on Chinese regional social, political, economic and legal development.
His recent publications, including several book chapters and a loose-leaf service, were mainly concerned with the regional development in China. He is now working on the Internet Development in China and its impact on Chinese social, political and legal systems.

Research interests
While teaching and coordinating all advanced Chinese subjects and Chinese for Business Communication, Dr Hong continues his research in contemporary Chinese government and politics. He is particularly interested in Chinese central-local government relations since 1949, regional political and economic development in post-Mao China and Chinese military modernisation.
He is currently conducting a research project with Dr Jianfu Chen of La Trobe University on Chinese local law and political development. He is also a co-author of monthly contribution to a Sydney-based law journal China Law Update.
