Communications in the School of English, Communications and Performance Studies

The School of English, Communications and Performance Studies is responsible for the provision of undergraduate programs and graduate research in Communications and Media Studies at the following Monash campuses:

The programs in Communications and Media Studies offered by the School provide students with a range of educational opportunities from first year to Honours and Doctoral levels of study. For those wanting to understand the dynamic changes in media and cultural industries and the need for persistent policy innovations which can address them, a program of units can be chosen to equip students with such expertise. Communications and Media Studies students learn to analyse the media critically; they also study the structure of the communications industries and the relations between the media, culture and society.

The theoretical developments in Communications and Media Studies are closely charted throughout the School's programs; both traditional media and new media are examined as distinct communication environments and their historical and technological convergence is explored in detail. The undergraduate program offers progression through to an Honours year. Supervision of graduate research is available in a number of areas. See the ECPS Communications and Media Studies pages for further information about staff and research in this field in the School.

Each campus specialises and develops particular areas both of interest to their staff and specific value to their student cohort, while providing, through the core studies, the foundation upon which all Communications inquiry is built.

For current details of the course structure and available subjects please refer to the on-line Monash undergraduate handbook and the Arts Coursework Areas of Study page. The outline below is intended as a general guide to the different degrees and subjects available at the different campuses.

Caulfield and Clayton

BA majoring in Communications and Media Studies

Communications and Mediaoffers a major and minor sequence at the Caulfield and Clayton campuses incorporating a mix of core compulsory and elective units. The major is structured around a core sequence with focus on new media and the dynamic changes in media and communication industries. Students interested in new media, cyberstudies and the changing face of traditional media will find units that address these areas in detail. The program also offers units which explore the relationship between media narratives, culture and power. These areas facilitate progression through to an Honours year hosted at the Berwick campus which provides advanced studies in contemporary media issues and a focus on industry and policy.

South Africa (Faculty of Arts South Africa)

BA majoring in Communications and Media Studies

Students undertaking Communication and Media Studies in South Africa gain an understanding of the organisation, processes and effects of traditional and new communications technologies. The program also addresses the changing patterns of ownership in the South African media. Since classes are small and staff/learner ratios are excellent, good opportunities exist for the development of experiential learning programs and specifically the application of new media technologies in public relations practice.
