Students at a site excavation site of the Pietramarina

Archaeology students in Prato

In the Provence of Prato, some 15km from the Monash Prato Centre, is the excavation site of the Pietramarina.

The site is an Etruscan walled settlement dated from about the 7th century BCE to the Late Republican, Early Imperial Roman period (1st Century BCE - 1st Century CE). It was restructured and probably walled around the 3rd century BCE.

On this year's trip, students carried out the excavation of the South-West sector of the public square in front of the walls, outside of the gate. The process of unearthing the stone floor of the square will continue next year with the new batch of students.

Gallipoli Study Tour

What do the participants say?

"A remarkable experience, both on an educational and personal level. I will never forget Gallipoli."
Catherine Tiernan, History and Theatre major, Bachelor of Arts

"Undertaking an international study program was one of the best decisions I could have made in the course of my University education. I got to visit and interact with a site that figures so highly in the national consciencness, as Gallipoli does. Coupled with the interaction with a distinctive culture it allowed me to grow both academically and personally. I would recommend international study to any current and future students."
Alex Dunn, History and Politics major, Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Commerce

"The Monash Gallipoli trip was an amazing experience that moved teaching from the class room to the cliffs or Anzac. It's an unique and inspiring experience to be a part of."
Hailey Berkhout, Australian studies and History major, Bachelor of Arts

"I've spent over half of my Bachelor of Arts (Global) degree overseas with an exchange to the United States, the Gallipoli Program and Arts in Prato, and an intercampus exchange to Malaysia. To my mind there is no greater vindication of Monash's motto to 'Go Boldly' than to participate in these sorts of unparalleled opportunities."
Thomas Woodroofe, Bachelor of Arts (Global), International Studies and Politics majors

Erin toured South Africa and Rwanda

Studying History was a highlight of Erin's undergraduate degree, so the progression to Honours where she could specialise seemed a natural one.

Erin's thesis is on children in the Lodz ghetto during the Holocaust. For one of her units she studied genocide and apartheid at Monash's South Africa campus and in Rwanda.

"This was a momentous learning experience for me. We spoke to victims of war crime, visited genocide sites and learned a lot about Rwandan and South African culture," says Erin.

Erin was also impressed with the depth of knowledge of the academics she travelled with and their international networks that provided them with unique learning experiences.
