Undergraduate Study in Communications and Media Studies
Communications is an interdisciplinary field of inquiry providing histories, analyses and explanatory frameworks for the ways in which traditional media and new communications technologies impact on everyday life. Studies cover the practical operation of media, the making and mediation of publics, the relations between governments, policy makers, media institutions and audiences, and the social and political outcomes of mediated relations.
Communications and Media Studies offered by the School of English, Communications and Performance Studies provides a range of educational opportunities for students wanting to understand the dynamic changes in media and cultural industries and the need for persistent policy innovations that can address them. Communications and Media Studies students learn to critically analyse the media and learn about the structure of the communications industries and the relations between the media, culture and society.
The discipline can be studied as a major/minor offered by the Faculty of Arts or in-depth as part of the Bachelor of Communication. Units are offered on the Berwick, Caulfield and Clayton campuses. Each campus specialises and develops particular areas both of interest to their staff and of specific value to students while providing, through the core studies, the foundation upon which all Communications inquiry is built.
The major is structured around a core sequence with focus on new media, and the dynamic changes in media and communication industries. Students interested in new media, cyberstudies and the changing face of traditional media will find units that address these areas in detail.
Communications and Media Studies Major
For information on how to build a major or minor in Communications and Media Studies see the Arts Current Students Area of Study website.
Bachelor of Communication
Berwick campus offers both the Communication and Media Studies major and a specialist degree in Communications. The Bachelor of Communication (BComn) aims to give students a sophisticated understanding of the broad range of theoretical approaches available for analysing media content, the social and cultural dimensions of communications, and the structure and practical operation of media and communications industries. The program undertakes a sustained analysis of both new and traditional communications technologies, locating them within the historical, social, cultural, political and economic contexts in which they operate. For further information go to the Arts Future Students and Arts Current Students websites.
How to Enrol
Communication and Media Studies (COM) units are available to students in any undergraduate course provided that they meet unit and course requirements. You can choose to study COM units just for interest or as part of a minor or major. Individual unit enrolment is also available via single unit studies or cross-institutional studies (i.e. for credit towards a course at another tertiary institution).
Before you enrol in COM units you need to enrol in an undergraduate course: see the Monash Future Students website for further information.
To enrol in units go to the Web Enrolment System (WES) or consult your Faculty about enrolment procedures for your course/faculty. See also Enrolment and Re-enrolment in the ECPS Student Services/Administrative Information section.
