Biography

Since 1990 I have been researching and writing about realist and documentary film with a special interest in Australian feature cinema. More recently I have been interested in American cinema. In 1996 I published Mapping the Imaginary: Ross Gibson's Camera Natura. Since that book I have written Australian Post-War Documentary Film: An Arc of Mirrors - on including the work of the Melbourne Realist Film Unit, the films of John Heyer, Cecil Holmes and R. Maslyn Williams. In 2008 Brian McFarlane and I wrote the book Michael Winterbottom for the Manchester UP's British Directors. In 2007 I began work with Con Verevis and Noel King on our Australian Research Council funded Australian Film Theory and Criticism project which has yielded many interviews and articles. At the moment I am writing a book on Sean Penn for Wallflower's Director's Cuts series. I teach Australian Film Studies and Documentary film Studies and supervise PhD students in documentary film, experimental film, Australian film, film history and realist film studies.

I am also the Editor of the international refereed scholarly journal Studies in Documentary Film {ISSN: 17503280}

The history and evolution of film theories relating to the realist mode.

Documentary Film

Historical and critical approaches to documentary film, in particular, immediate postwar documentary films across the world.

Australian Film History, Intertextuality and Film

The relationship between films, books, figures and songs etc.

Musicality and Film Theory

The function of songs and music in film soundtracks and music video.
