Biography
Writing an undergraduate paper that analysed Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice as a ‘Beauty and the Beast’ narrative, I realised that I wanted to be an academic. I’ve covered musical theatre, animation and fairy tale in my postgraduate work at the University of Queensland and Monash University. Now I teach a range of fairy tale, children’s and fantasy literature. I count myself fortunate to be in a position to spend days thinking, talking and writing about pig kings, other mothers with buttons for eyes, big bad wolves and red shoes.

Fairy Tale
I am interested in contemporary fairy tales, including novels, comics and animated features. I am also researching the female fairy tale writers of France under Louis XIV.
Children’s Literature
My particular interest is in contemporary fantasy writing for children and YA markets, covering authors such as Neil Gaiman, Meg Cabot, Diana Wynne Jones, Terry Pratchett and J.K. Rowling.
Book History
My research covers the impact of digital and online technologies and forums on literature, including author blogging and tweeting and the evolution of the eBook. I am also interested in paratextual matter.
Musical
My research focuses on contemporary musical theatre and I am also interested in the use of the musical form in episodic television and in projects such as Dr Horrible’s Sing-A-Long Blog.
