Biography
Dr. Zhichang Xu is a lecturer in English as an International Language (EIL) at Monash University, Australia. He has a disciplinary background in Applied Linguistics and Intercultural Education. He has extensive research and teaching experiences in Beijing, Perth, Hong Kong, and Melbourne.
Dr. Xu's research areas include Chinese English (as an emerging Expanding Circle variety of English), English language teaching (ELT), intercultural education, blended teaching and learning, academic writing, and Chinese studies. His teaching focuses on language proficiency and content-based courses. These include English listening, speaking, reading, and writing to Chinese learners of English, ESP/EAP courses for science and engineering students, Vocabulary Studies, Discourse Analysis, Pedagogical Grammar, Language and Society, Second Language Acquisition and Chinese Learning, ELT Methodology, and Talking Across Cultures. Dr. Xu has supervised Honour's and Master's students for Bachelor of Education in English Language (BEdEL) programme, and Master of Arts in Teaching English as an International Language (MATEIL) programme. He has also co-supervised EdD and PhD students in Hong Kong.
Dr. Xu has received an International Postgraduate Research Scholarship (IPRS) for his doctoral studies (2002-2005), and a Curtin University Completion Scholarship for Postgraduate Research Students (2005). He was an Associate Professor at Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics (1992-2002), and an Assistant Professor and Associate Programme Coordinator for MATEIL and MEd/MATESOL programmes in the English Department of the Hong Kong Institute of Education (2006-2011) before joining Monash University.
