Why study in English?

Academic excellence

Academics in our English teaching program are highly regarded. Many have substantial international profiles and are expert speakers and panellists at prestigious academic events. Some are notable literary commentators and critics.

Our academics' specialist areas of expertise in teaching and research include: world/postcolonial literatures in English, literary adaptations, creative and professional writing, science fiction and fantasy, children’s literature, Australian literature, 18th Century literature, romanticism and early modern literature.

International opportunities

The School of English, Communications and Performance Studies has numerous formal and informal alliances with peer institutions across the developed and developing world.

Our English program also has established and growing relationships and partnerships in global academia. The Centre for Postcolonial Writing, for example, is a global player in postcolonial literary critical and creative writing and has formal partnerships with the University of Calcutta, the Goethe Frankfurt University and Arizona State University.

There are opportunities for student exchanges and internships, for international scholarships and study trips. Students wishing to explore opportunities abroad are supported and encouraged. We also offer the prestigious Cecile Parrish Scholarships for Honours and postgraduate study of English Literature.

Teaching environment

English at Monash Univesity is lively and intellectually stimulating. Internationally-renowned specialists challenge students to relate their study of poems, plays and novels to ideas about culture and language. Our English program regularly updates its curriculum and ensures that each topic is taught by experts by adopting a mixture of team and solo teaching approaches.

We provides an environment where students receive encouragement and support. While it isn’t always easy to put your heart on your sleeve and present your own work or ideas, the atmosphere in English is friendly, open-minded and inclusive. Our students say that they feel at ease in class, and are comfortable presenting their ideas.

Our English program is a community of like-minded literary types, finding a sense of belonging through a shared love of the book, of reading and of writing.

Careers in English

Our graduates are literate, flexible and persuasive. They are able to communicate with ease and effectiveness, conduct complex research and think independently and critically. The ability to communicate effectively is the primary criteria in staff recruitment. Our English teaching program delivers an excellent range of communications skills and a competitive advantage in the graduate labour market.

English graduates become editors, scriptwriters, teachers and academics, publishers, journalists, copywriters, speechwriters and public relations experts. They take up positions as policy advisors and communications strategists.

Our students have also gone on to become novelists and writers, winning major literary awards and gaining significant public profiles.
