Introduction

The English Section offers a variety of units both in writing (creative, academic and professional) and in the literatures and cultures of Australia, Britain, and the United States.

In first year students are introduced to the study of English through a choice among several units. As of 2005, a first-year sequence in English for those who intend to proceed to second-year units in English, including those in Creative Writing, must include at least one literature unit.

The English Major/Minor

Second and third-year units in English literature build on the first-year foundation. There are units which introduce students to the literature and culture of different historical periods from Anglo-Saxon to the present, and further units which allow students to specialize in these areas. Related units are offered in the following fields: Ausralian studies, American studies, the theory and practice of children's literature, critical theory, feminist theory and women's writing, postcolonial theory and literature, the languages of literature, literary and visual semiotics and performance studies, cinema studies, creative writing and professional writing. Students may select from these areas to develop their major in English.

Please note that most units are now offered in alternate years, so if a unit you want (such as Renaissance Literature) is not offered in the current year it may well be offered in the next. The faculty handbook (see the sidebar/highlight box) contain information regarding which units are offered in which years.
