Step 1: Receiving an offer
There are three ways you can respond to your offer from the Faculty of Arts. You can accept, defer or reject your offer. Further instructions on how to proceed in each case is provided below. Make sure you have your offer letter nearby, it contains the following important information you need to refer to when responding to your offer:
- Your student identification number
- Details about the course you have been offered; including your course code and title
- The fee type for your offer
Do you want to accept your offer?
To accept your offer you will need to complete the administrative forms and enrol in units on the Web Enrolment System (WES). However, before you attempt to enrol you should complete steps 3 and 4 of the enrolment guide. If you are a VTAC round 1 student you should also attend a pre-enrolment or enrolment session for your course, please refer to the pre-enrolment website for details on sessions at your campus of offer.
Do you want to defer your offer?
When you are offered a place in a course you may wish to delay the start of your studies, for work, family or travel reasons. This is what universities refer to as a deferment.
You can defer your place for six months or one year; this means the Faculty will hold your place in your course for the specified period of time. By deferring your place you can take some time off from studying and it does not count towards the completion time limit for your course. At the end of your deferment period you can begin your studies without the need to reapply for your course.
We will contact you when you are due to return from your deferment to advise you on how you are to enrol – so make sure you keep your contact details up to date.
How to apply for deferment
If you would like to accept your offer, but defer commencement of study for one or two semesters, you will need to officially inform the Faculty of Arts. If you do not officially notify us of your request to defer you will lose your place in your course.
You can defer your offer via one of the following methods:
Apply for a course deferment online via the Web Enrolment System (WES)
You will need to register for your computer access. Once you have your Authcate user name and password, login to the WES and from the homepage click on the ‘apply for a course deferment’ option.
Send your home campus an email from your Monash student email account
If you cannot complete your deferment via WES, you may send us an email from your Monash student email account requesting a period of deferment. You must register for your computer access to gain access to your student email account.
In your email, please include your student identification number (included in your offer letter or email), the semester and the year you intend to begin your studies. Send your email to the email address for your home campus. You should note that email deferments take longer to process. Please be patient, we will notify you after your deferment has been entered in the student database.
Complete a deferment application form
Download and complete a deferment application form and send to the Faculty of Arts office on your home campus. We will send confirmation to your postal address after your deferment has been entered in the student database.
When will I need to enrol?
We will notify you when you need to enrol. If you defer for a full year, we will notify you in January 2010. You will need to complete the pre-enrolment and enrolment steps for your course next year. If you defer for a half a year we will notify you late in June about commencing your studies.
Our deferred students are treated as new students, so you can relax and enjoy your time away from studies. The only thing you need to do to is to ensure your postal address details are up to date. You can do this yourself on WES.
What if I want to start my studies early?
If you request a deferral for 12 months, but decide you want to start studying after 6 months you can complete an early return from deferment request and return it to your home campus. Please refer to the principal dates website for semester dates. You should note that students are not eligible to enrol in units after the end of the second week in each semester.
Rejecting your offer
You do not need to complete any further steps to reject your offer. Your offer will lapse automatically if you do not accept or defer.
If you want to let us know that you want to reject your course offer, you can email your home campus. Please include your student identification number and your course details. This information is available on your offer letter from Monash University.
