Step 4: Choose your units
You must choose units to enrol in for 2009 to accept your offer.
Undergraduate enrolment requires that you decide which disciplines (areas of study) you are interested in and which individual units within those disciplines/areas you want to enrol in.
A unit, also known as a subject, is the basic unit of study in an undergraduate degree. It will usually run for a single semester and is worth 6 credit points. There are some undergraduate units worth 12 credit points.
Please read disciplines - Faculty of Arts in the undergraduate handbook. It contains important information to help you select your units for 2009. This includes information on:
- Unit codes - areas of study (prefix list)
- Units from other faculties recognised as arts units
- Units available to arts students from other faculties as non-arts units
You can find out what units are offered each year by accessing the unit information sections of the undergraduate handbook. Each unit code is made up of three letters and four numbers: the letters refer to the discipline (area of study) and the first number indicates year level, e.g. PHL1010 is a Philosophy first year level unit.
Before making any unit choices, make sure you have read the course description and course map for your undergraduate degree.
Areas of study
The Faculty of Arts offers over fifty areas of study and you can choose units from a number of these areas, depending on your course structure. The areas of study section of the handbook lists the disciplines taught by the Faculty of Arts. It is your best resource for finding out about the disciplines available for you to study. By clicking on the entry for a particular discipline, you will find a description of the discipline and a list of the units that count towards that discipline for sequence, minor and major requirements, including any core units.

What if you want to do a language unit?
Mid-year Students
Students with prior background in a language may be able to commence mid-year, subject to approval of the program. A number of entry points are available in both semesters - further information can be found via the School of Languages, Cultures and Linguistics web page. Students should contact the School directly for information on mid-year entry and placement testing in the language of their choice, by phone on 99052223 or 99052281, or email LCL.Enquiries@arts.monash.edu.au.
Taking units at another campus
Students may study units on another campus without permission.
Taking units from another faculty
Some courses offered by the Faculty of Arts enable you to take units from another faculty. The course description and course map will include information on any elective units in your degree. It is your responsibility to ensure that any units you complete in another faculty will count towards your Arts degree.
Students enrolled in double degrees are not permitted to take units from another faculty as part of the Arts component of the course.
Before enrolling in a unit in another faculty check that you meet any pre or co-requisite requirements. Students should also read the information provided in the disciplines - Faculty of Arts section of the Undergraduate Handbook under the following headings:
- Units from other faculties recognised as arts units
- Units available to arts students from other faculties as non-arts units
Do you intend to transfer to a double degree course?
If you intend to transfer to a double degree and want to take units from another faculty, you should note that you may not receive full credit for units completed. For example, if you completed a marketing unit in the Bachelor of Arts and then transferred to the Bachelor of Arts / Bachelor of Laws you would not receive credit for the marketing unit in the double degree course.
Taking units at another institution
Complementary Studies is when you study units at another Australian university as part of your Monash degree. You can do this if the unit is not offered by the Faculty of Arts at Monash in a particular semester.
Please visit the complementary studies website for further information.
Why do some units require 'authorisation'?
A small number of Arts units require authorisation because place numbers are limited. WES enrolment cannot be used for these units. Many research units require consultation with the School before enrolment can be processed. You can find out which units require authorisation by visiting the Units that require authorisation website.
To enrol in a unit that requires authorisation you must complete an enrolment amendment form (available at the faculty office on your home campus) and have it signed by the relevant school/faculty. Once you have been authorised to study one of these units, your enrolment will be processed by a member of the Arts Student Services team.
Public Relations (PRJ): Public Relations units available at the Caulfield campus are restricted to the Bachelor of Arts at Caulfield only and the Bachelor of Arts (Journalism) at Caulfield only. Students enrolled in these courses are required to complete an application to take public relations units form to be considered for these units. Please note this restriction applies to Faculty of Arts students only.
