What is honours?

Honours is an optional fourth year of study following the completion of the requirements of an undergraduate degree such as the Bachelor of Arts.
The Honours program offers in-depth study into an area of special interest through research and a thesis.
Course structure
The degree is 48 points, or 1 year of full time study. See study load, for part-time information.
Although requirements can vary between areas of study, the Honours program usually involves:
2 coursework units (or 24 points) - like normal undergraduate units, only at a fourth year level
2 research units (or 24 points) - you will produce a thesis under supervision in these units
You can complete the Honours program in your major area of study. If you completed a double major, you also have the option of either combined or double Honours.
Single, combined or double Honours
Honours studies may be taken as:
Single Honours | a single area of study over one year of full-time study
Combined Honours | two areas of study over one year of full-time study (see combined honours)
Double Honours | two areas of study over two years of full-time study (effectively 2 single Honours programs)
Honours may be studied part-time. See study load
Areas of study
Monash Arts offers honours in over 40 areas of study, spread across 5 campuses. See Honours areas of study
Eligibility
If you are maintaining at least a 70 percent average in your major area of study, particularly in your second and third year units, you have the potential to be an Honours student. See entry requirements
