Applied Japanese Linguistics
This course is designed for current or prospective secondary or tertiary teachers of Japanese who want to update their theoretical and practical knowledge of Japanese language and its use, together with language teaching and acquisition.
Students further their understanding of second and foreign language acquisition, language teaching, language contact and intercultural communication with particular reference to Japanese. They also develop skills in critical reading and the ability to design a research project.

English as an International Language
The Master of English as an International Language is an innovative interdisciplinary course designed for those who are interested in exploring the issues associated with the role of English as an international language.
The course covers issues that relate to the socio-cultural, conceptual, and ideological considerations that relate to the spread of English around the world. It addresses issues such as the speaker’s identity, teaching of English as an international language, and the use of English as a lingua franca in international professional contexts.

Interpreting and Translation Studies
This course suits students with advanced bilingual proficiency. It aims to develop skills in translation and interpreting from/to English and another language, and to raise awareness of practical and theoretical approaches to translation/ interpreting practice and studies.
The higher level theoretical units focus on recent research issues in the emerging field of interpreting studies and on familiarising students with current research models and methodologies in translation studies. The core units provide intensive language-specific practice in written and oral transfer skills to the National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters (NAATI) professional level. Core units also provide the discourse analysis, ethical and professional frameworks that are essential for professional interpreting and translation practice.
The main languages available are Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean and Spanish. Other languages may be available dependent on student numbers.

Japanese Language
This course is designed to allow graduates who have competence equivalent to at least a basic major in Japanese (level six Japanese) to extend their competence in the language. Students who complete the course will have an understanding of the world view of the field of study; a critical appreciation of the secondary literature and key texts; advanced reading, written and verbal skills and advanced analytical skills.

In this course students complete the equivalent of an undergraduate major in Chinese, French, German, Hispanic, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Ukrainian, Hebrew, Yiddish and Latin. Students enrol at a level that matches their competence. These levels range from introductory to advanced and a student’s entry level is decided by the school of languages.

This course is available only to approved students from the Central European University (CEU), Hungary and Jean Moulin Lyon III (JMLIII), France. Students must have completed relevant Coursework at either of these institutions.
The course enables students to take coursework units drawn from their chosen discipline of study within the Faculty of Arts. These units will be selected from core and elective units offered within the faculty’s existing coursework masters degrees.
Students will be granted 24 points of credit on the basis of approved masters-level studies completed at CEU/JMLIII and undertake 24 points of fourth and fifth-year-level units over one semester full-time on-campus at Monash University.

Translation Studies
The course seeks to develop students' skills in translation to
and from English and another language, and their awareness of practical and theoretical approaches to translation and translation studies. The main languages available are Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean and Spanish. Other languages may be available depending on student numbers. Students will be given a foundation in theories of translation and will also receive training in research on translation studies.
Translation Studies - Double Masters
Monash University and Jean Moulin University in Lyon, France are running a double Masters in Translation Studies. The program is aimed at French and Australian students and its objective is to train future translators working in both language directions, English-to-French or French-to-English.
Courses are taught collaboratively by academics and by professional translators and are based both on theory and practice.
Students follow courses in two languages – French and English. Students are totally immersed in two cultures as they spend a full year in Australia and a full year in France. During this time they train with practitioners and other representatives of the translating industry (professional translators, translation agencies, language service providers etc) as well as with French and/or Australian companies that need such services.
