Communications focuses on the organization, processes and effects of traditional and new communications technologies such as print, television, film and electronic media. Students learn to critically analyse the media and learn about the structure of communications industries and the relations between media, culture and power. Communications theory is an integral part of the discipline coupled with an investigation of the practices, technologies and processes that make up modern media.

Comparative literature and cultural studies

This is an interdisciplinary program drawing on language, cultures and literature. Much of the work deals with comparative or world literature; cultural studies which is the study of literature in relation to other arts and media (for example film and TV); and critical theory which is the study of contemporary approaches to literary and cultural criticism.

There are a wide variety of units in English studies. Some emphasise the study of English language, some the study of a particular author in depth, some the formal elements of literary genres, some the critical and scholarly methods of studying and writing about English literature. Others consider English literature in a context of social history and the history of ideas, others in relation to film. The school offers units in writing including academic writing, professional writing and creative writing.

Film and television

Film and Television Studies This area of study aims to extend our everyday way of thinking about film and television into more specialised approaches and methods. Taking an historical, textual and critical approach, the course overs Australian, Asian and European national cinemas, contemporary Hollywood, alternative film, documentary film, popular television genres and video practice.
Journalism

Journalism is the professional expression of ideas and events in public affairs. It explores how information on events, issues, trends and ideas is gathered and presented to the public and defines the relationship between society and the individual. Journalism helps shape the flow of information among all citizens at local, national and international levels. Students develop skills in writing, research, interviewing, negotiation and presenting. These apply to print, radio, television, desktop publishing, electronic journalism, narrowcasting and broadcasting.
Journalism studies

This program in journalism studies complements the journalism program, but can also be taken as a stand-alone sequence of study. It explores recent and contemporary scholarship about the institutional context and practice of journalism in Australia and internationally. It takes an interdisciplinary approach, drawing on media studies, political economy, history, philosophy and sociology among other disciplines. It develops advanced skills in media research, and fosters a critical while sympathetic interrogation of journalism practice.
Literary studies

Three pathways are offered through the literary studies sequence in literary studies on the Caulfield and Clayton campuses. Literatures in English, Creative writing, and International literatures. Not all units are offered at both campuses.
Public Relations

Public Relations is concerned with building and maintaining relationships between organisations and people who are stakeholders in these organisations. The program will equip students with the techniques and tactics to work in an area that is fast becoming integral to organisational development. It will also provide students with the analytical tools to reflect on the functions and roles of public relations in modern day organisations and society as a whole.
Visual culture

The discipline of Visual Culture includes critical and historical studies in cinema, television and cyberculture, art history and theory, fashion, advertising and photography, video production and architecture. Studies in visual culture are linked to the culture industry so that students are taught critical and strategic skills that can be applied to specific careers in the arts and entertainment industries. Students enrolling in visual culture are encouraged to undertake
hands-on assessment tasks particularly through our internship program that matches students with institutions.
Writing

A range of contemporary writing practices are explored in the context of cultural and media studies, materialist and feminist frameworks, and analysis of literary and other media forms. Students will become familiar with different kinds of contemporary writing, and the techniques of contemporary cultural production. A writing portfolio will also be produced by students and contributed to the publishing spaces.
