Spotlight: Rachel Ung

Profile

Name - Rachel Ung

Course - Bachelor of Arts, Third year student

Majors - English and Philosophy

Most memorable Monash experience so far

A lecturer of mine who had suffered opposition in forging her own career once encouraging me to "keep studying while I had the opportunity, even if you aren't completely sure where it will lead you. For your education is something that no one can take away from you and something not everyone has the opportunity to do."

Most challenging experience

Having to take units that I either didn't think I would be interested in but needed to complete towards a certain major/minor, or units that I knew would be really difficult but wanted to take because they were of great interest to me. In the case of the former, I was surprised (ie interested!!) every time. And in regards to the latter I learnt that enthusiasm always overcompensates for ability.

What you love about doing an Arts degree

That my entire conceptions of what I previously believed to be "thinking" and "knowledge" were challenged.

Career aspirations

To be a professional educator, whose reputation for innovative teaching methods and strategies eventually inspire nationwide education reform.
