Honours Program in German Studies

Overview
An Honours Year consists of 48 points, made up from a minor thesis and coursework.
German Studies offers two types of theses, one worth 12 points and one worth 24 points. The thesis can be written either in English or German. There is a strong expectation that students will complete at least one semester 's study at a German university.
Prerequisites
Students may be admitted to Honours at fourth-year language level if they have
- completed a BA degree with a major in German Studies (48 points)
- completed at least German Studies 6, (GRN 3060) or equivalent (GRN 3325 in the pre-2004 system)
- and achieved an average of 70 (Distinction level)
Mid-year entry is offered subject to places being available.
Course units
All students will enrol in the core subjects:GRN 4615 German Studies - advanced IV, part 1 (6 points) in first semester and GRN 4625 German- advanced IV, part 2 (6 points) in second semester.
GRN 4365 Honours Dissertation (24 points)
In special circumstances, permission may be given to enrol instead in
GRN 4355 Honours Dissertation (12 points)
The remaining 12 or 24 points are made up from optional seminars as below.
Honours with Language or Linguistics specialisation
Students will also enrol in one or two of the language/linguistic options listed below:
GRN 4166 German Language and Society: Research Project (12 points)
GRN 4995 Language Study Abroad (12 points)
GRN 4375 Special Reading Course (12 points)

A book prize will be awarded for the best degree each year (subject to conditions).
