About the School of Geography and Environmental Science

Picture of a triumphant figure on a hill

Geography is the study of physical environments and human habitats. Both a physical and a social science, our programmes of study are designed to promote understanding of natural environments and social processes, and the interactions among them.

We emphasise the integration of perspectives from the natural and physical sciences, the social sciences and the humanities, to achieve insights into the relationships between people and the natural and constructed environments of which we are a part. The ability to integrate knowledge and perspectives across traditional disciplinary perspectives affords the special ability to contribute to the effective management of human activities in the interests of facilitating living patterns and development that are sustainable. The School of Geography and Environmental Science (SGES) teaches into human and physical geography, people-environment interactions, environmental management, and Australian indigenous archaeology.

Through our teaching and research we seek to facilitate informed understanding of:

  • The complex interdependencies between people and the environment of which they are part
  • Historical and contemporary processes that shape the natural world
  • The role of human agency in transforming natural and social environments
  • The rich diversity of approaches to the accumulation of knowledge concerning the interrelationships of place, people and environment.
