English Language Requirements for Arts Research Candidates

In addition to meeting the academic entry requirements, international applicants must also meet the English language requirement for their prospective degree.

If an applicant's first language is not English, they must provide documentary evidence of English language proficiency in support of their admission application.

Listed below are the English test result requirements for admission to research degrees in the Faculty of Arts:

Alternative Ways to Meet the English Language Requirements

Applicants who meet the following crtieria do not necessarily have to provide an English test result with their admission application but Monash University reserves the right to request further evidence of English proficiency.

Applicants to have successfully completed a course of tertiary studies of at least two years' duration:

(a) in a country where English is the official language* AND

(b) at Monash's Malaysian or South African campus, or an equivalent Malaysian tertiary education campus recognised by Monash University AND where studies were completed within the two year period prior to application.

*Where studies have been conducted entirely in English, involving formal assessment of written work where English is one of two or more official languages of that country, a case may be made to the Faculty of Arts and/or Monash Research Graduate School Committee by the relevant academic unit. The World Factbook lists the official languages of all countries.
