Personal History

Studying Law, History and English Literature at Monash since 1999, Richard completed his Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in the School of Historical Studies in 2003. He commenced a PhD in the School in March 2004, completing in March 2008. Richard held the temporary position of Lecturer in 2007, and commenced as an Assistant Lecturer at the beginning of 2008. During his doctoral candidature, Richard was active as a sessional tutor and guest lecturer in a variety of undergraduate courses in History and International Studies.

Current Research

Richard is currently working on an edited collection of essays on the use of political cartoons as sources in history. Titled Drawing the Line, the collection includes work from postgraduate and early-career researchers from Europe, Australia, North America, Africa and Asia, and deals with a number of key issues of representation (class, gender, race, religion, etc.). The book is scheduled for publication by the Monash University ePress in late 2008. Richard is also working on turning the research for his dissertation into book or shorter format; including the portrayal of Germany and the Germans in British cartography, travel literature, popular and literary fiction, the press and political cartoons, c.1860-1914.
