Roslyn Smorgon Program in Jewish Communal Service and Leadership
Course Convenor: Melanie LandauNamed in honour of Roslyn Smorgon, whose life left a legacy of Jewish communal service and leadership, this program is the first of its kind in Australia. It was officially launched by Monash University's Vice Chancellor and President, Professor Richard Larkins, on 18 November 2008. The JCSL program deepens people's understanding of Jewish life in Australia and the challenges and opportunities that face the community. Course units are taught by local and international academics. This program will prepare students for leadership positions in the Jewish community and professionally develop the skills of people already engaged in the field.
Students are drawn from a wide background including professional staff and CEO’s of communal organisations, fundraisers, museum volunteers, lay leadership of organisations and those involved in formal and informal Jewish education. Students tailor their courses individually and can choose units offered by the ACJC and benefit from other Monash faculties including Business and Economics, Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences and Art and Design.
The course will be taught to enable students to continue working while studying for this Professional Development degree which will be awarded at a variety of levels. A prestigious scholarship in Jewish Community Innovation will be offered each year.
Rethinking Australian Jewish Life: Policy and Practice
The core unit will invite a range of experts to critically analyse the following themes. The core unit can be offered over a five day intensive period to accommodate interstate participation.
