WHY STUDY KOREAN?

You know that Australia is moving away from its dependence on Europe and the West and that therefore Australia's future, our future, lies in the Asia-Pacific region. But do you know that Korea is our second largest trading partner. This means that employers in business and trading companies, law firms, schools and universities, Federal and State Governments have a need for people with Korean expertise.

Information and Technology
Australia has growing position as a key provider of information and technology to the Asian market. People with Korean language qualifications are in great demand in an existing and expanding sector of information and technology.

Education
Australia has growing position as a key provider of education to the Asian market, in courses for Asian students in Australian schools and colleges, so that Korean studies would be an asset in job applications in the field of Education. The number of students taking Korean in Australian universities has risen by 1,000% in five years. Korean is also being actively taught in schools in Victoria, and is on the way to being taught in other states. The Federal Government has begun a program to introduce Korean as a secondary level subject throughout Australia during the 1990s. Teachers with Korean language qualifications are already in demand in an existing and expanding sector of education. Australian Government report has recommended Korean as one of four priority Asian languages to be taught in Australian primary schools from 1996.

Business and Industry
Most major Australian companies are engaged in substantial trade activities with Korea. Companies such as CRA and BHP, and banks such as NAB, ANZ and Westpac have branch offices in Seoul. These companies repeatedly express their need for graduate trainees with business and specialising in Asian languages. In the tourism and hospitality industries, Qantas estimates that Korean tourism to Australia will treble over the next three years alone. Thus, Korean language qualifications are attractive to prospective employers such as airlines, hotel chains, resorts, sporting and cultural facilities and tourist agencies.

Public Service
Graduates with Korean are in demand with the Commonwealth Public Service, especially Foreign Affairs and Trade and Austrade.

Social and Community Work
Employment opportunities in the social work field may also be enhanced by the knowledge of a significant community language.
