This is an exciting new internationally focussed course with a compulsory language component.

The course aims to produce students with high levels of language proficiency, intercultural competence and the ability to function effectively in international professional and social domains.

It will be attractive to students who may want to live, work or travel overseas extensively in their working lives, those who come to university with language skills that can be enhanced and those who want to develop cross-cultural skills and knowledge and engage directly with other societies and cultures directly.

In addition to strengthening skills in communicating across cultures, the BA International will develop graduates who can contribute to social cohesion in Australia, by equipping them with skills that will enable them to function effectively in an increasingly multicultural community, and by promoting the value of languages and cultures in this diverse community.

Major

Students complete either a major in international studies or a major in a language.

Minor

If completing a major in international studies, students must complete at least a minor in a language. If they complete a major in a language they must complete at least a minor in international studies.

Single unit

There is a compulsory second/third year unit called Managing Intercultural Communication.

An Arts first-year sequence (2 units)

Two units from Arts in first year chosen from the following disciplines www.arts.monash.edu/future/undergraduate/study-areas.php

Electives from Arts or another faculty (9 units)

Students can choose electives from a single area of study to create another major plus an elective or they can explore a variety of electives. These units can be taken from Arts or another faculty such as Business.

Studying overseas

A special feature of this degree is that students must study overseas for at least one semester but may do so for up to three. They can study at Monash Malaysia, Monash South Africa or another approved Monash partner university anywhere in the world. Overseas studies begin in second year, giving students the opportunity to investigate their options and preferred destinations. A limited number of financial grants may be offered to assist students with their overseas study requirements. Up to two semesters can be studied by off-campus learning or online.

As the world economy becomes more internationalised, employers are increasingly looking for graduates who are mobile, interculturally aware and have skills in a language other than English. Students with expertise in international studies will be equipped with a knowledge of world history, current affairs and an insight into the political underpinnings that affect the way organisations work.
