This symposium focuses on discourse analysis research that specifically investigates how people’s talk informs us about the complexities of cross-cultural/intercultural communication, with special reference to linguistic choices. Cultural assumptions, beliefs, norms and values are some key aspects that may contribute to miscommunication or communication breakdown when they are not shared.
This symposium is open to those in the fields of linguistics, medicine, psychology, anthropology, sociology and education who conduct research or have an interest in any of the approaches used in discourse analysis (e.g. conversational analysis, interactional sociolinguistics, pragmatics, etc).
