About the Conference
The First Monash University Postgraduate Conference on Theoretical and Applied Linguistics has been instigated by Associate Professor Farzad Sharifian (Convenor – English as an International Language, Director – Language and Society Centre), who wanted to facilitate an opportunity for postgraduate students to present their research in a supportive and constructive environment. This event is organised and run totally by a committee of Monash University postgraduate students and will be held at the Clayton campus on July 1st 2010.
The title, First Monash Postgraduate Conference on Theoretical and Applied Linguistics, reflects the inclusive nature of this conference, allowing higher degree by research (HDR) postgraduate students in all stages of candidature to participate. Presentations will conducted by HDR students studying some aspect of language at any Victorian university. Students may present results from their research, or explore theoretical issues which have arisen in their studies.
The aim of this conference is not only to present emerging research in the area of linguistics, but also to foster links between HDR students in a period of study which is often isolating. It is hoped this event will strengthen the postgraduate research community at Monash and with other universities.
