Postgraduate Diploma in Applied Linguistics - PostGraduate/Graduate Coursework
Note for students applying for 2012
From 2012, Monash has merged its existing Postgraduate Diploma in Applied Linguistics with the Graduate Diploma in Applied Japanese Linguistics, and Graduate Diploma in English as an International Language.
This merger results in one course, the Graduate Diploma in Applied Linguistics, which has three streams:
- General Applied Linguistics (available either on-campus or off-campus),
- Japanese Applied Linguistics, (on-campus students only)
- English as an International Language (on-campus students only)
Students enrolling in the new Graduate Diploma in Applied Linguistics can still study the full range of units previously available in English as an International Language or Applied Linguistics.

1. Course outline and structure (Summary)
This course deals with the basics of linguistics, and may be taken for its own sake or by way of preparation for the study of the applications of linguistics to professional and social contexts which is covered in the Masters in Applied Linguistics program. The program is normally taken over one year (full-time) and two years (part-time). Students will take three core fourth-year level units and one elective fourth or fifth year level unit. Students may substitute an approved unit from another program or faculty for one unit.
Students require a credit average in the Postgraduate Diploma program to transfer to the Masters in Applied Linguistics by coursework.
The Postgraduate Diploma in Applied Linguistics normally consists of three (but minimally two) core units and one (or maximally two) elective unit (twelve points per unit, forty-eight points in total).

Students will gain a critical understanding of theoretical and practical issues relating to applied linguistics, including second/foreign language acquisition, language teaching, language contact and intercultural communication.
2. Objectives
The learning objectives of this diploma require students to acquire a knowledge of the basic subdisciplines of linguistics and to gain a critical understanding of theoretical and practical issues relating to applied linguisics.
Upon successful completion of this program, students should have an understanding of the some of the basic theoretical concepts, and approaches of the discipline and have gained experience in the use of some analytic and research techniques.
At the completion of the course students will be able to:
a. Display a basic understanding and an awareness of scholarly literature and research in the area of applied linguistics;
b. Critically assess research reports dealing with applied linguistics
c. Assess research methods used in applied linguistic studies.

Applicants should hold
- a Bachelors degree with at least a credit average in the final year, or
- a Bachelors pass degree with demonstrable professional experience at a senior level in a relevant area (Such applicants will need to supply a CV, a 1000 word statement and names of two professional referees), or
- completion of the Monash Faculty/Graduate Certificate in Applied Linguistics provided a credit average in the Faculty/ Graduate Certificate was achieved. (In accordance with the policy to award credit for prior learning, advanced standing to a maximum of 24 points may be counted towards the Postgraduate Diploma in Applied Linguistics.)
Note that prior study of Linguistics is not required as a prerequisite.

10. English language requirements
Same as for English proficiency requirements for the Faculty of Arts:
(a) IELTS - an overall band score of not less than 6.5 on the IELTS. In addition, a score of at least 6.0 is required in each module and applicants must undertake the appropriate module (A, B or C) in regard to reading and writing; or
(b) TOEFL - an overall score of 580, with a 5 in the TWE test. Scores must be available for both the TOEFL and TWE. A minimum score of at least 237 is needed on the computerized TOEFL testing, plus a core of 5 or more for the TWE; or
(c) Successful completion of a course of tertiary studies of at least two years duration requiring formal assessment of written work in an English-speaking country.
Note that students from countries assessed by the government as categories 3 and 4 must take the IELTS test and not TOEFL.
11. Credit provision
Students may apply for credit for prior study not already counted towards a degree. Exemption may be awarded for other prior learning relating to compulsory subjects, however students will then be required to take additional electives in lieu.
12. Exit points
After successful completion of 24 points, students may apply to exit the program with a Graduate Certificate in Linguistics.
