APHNC Mission Statement
To foster, co-ordinate and articulate Monash University's interests and strengths in health development in the Asia Pacific Region through partnerships and networks.
This year, has seen a strengthening of the Asia Pacific Health & Nutrition Centre's place in Monash University affairs and greater opportunities for Asia Pacific engagement. This is because of the greater emphases the University is according internationalism in its undergraduate and graduate programmes and in research. The number of international students at Monash is increasing, and more and more Australian Monash students study abroad as part of their programs.
Asia Pacific Health & Nutrition Centre has been buffeted by economic and environmental problems in this region, with recrudescence of protein energy malnutrition alongside chronic non-communicable diseases and evidence of new food and livestock borne infection. It would seen that the Asia Pacific Health & Nutrition Centre and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Centre of Excellence in Food Quality, Safety and Nutrition, can together become a key resource and catalyst in health and nutrition for the Asia Pacific region.
The principal activities for the Asia Pacific Health & Nutrition Centre are in the areas of:
- Health ageing in the Asia Pacific region
- Culturally-sensitive, innovative food and nutrition science for future health
- Cross cultural health promotion
- The nature of evidence for health care in Asia Pacific settings
- Telehealth with a focus on community development in the region
