To understand Asia is to appreciate the growing cultural, scientific, intellectual and military impact of the rising powers of the twenty-first century. The civilisations of China and India are also among the world's oldest and most sophisticated. Asia's influence and complexity and presents researchers with unique challenges and opportunities.
Research on Asia at Monash
Monash University is one of the leading centres in Asian studies in Australia, with over 200 researchers working on various aspects of Asian life. We offer research with a special focus on cross-disciplinary work addressing issues of regional and global significance. Staff and affiliates possess a broad range of expertise encompassing the history, culture, politics, and economy of Asia. This breadth complements the multidisciplinary orientation of study, and informs several ongoing research projects. Strong international connections assist students in preparing and undertaking fieldwork. Much specialist material is available to researchers at the Asian Studies Research Collection of Matheson Library.

If you are interested in applying for a research degree (PhD or Masters by Research) at Monash, we recommend that you follow the steps given by Monash Research Graduate School to check your eligibility for entry.
We strongly advise that you undertake an online self-assessment. It will help determine whether you meet the academic entry requirements, as well as whether you are eligible for a postgraduate research scholarship.
If you meet the entry requirements, and have identified your research area, please consult the list of Research Topics and Supervisors (in the Faculty of Arts), which may help you find a potential supervisor/s. If your research area is not on the list, you are welcome to send an email to Dr Max Richter, the Director of MAI, with your curriculum vitae (including publications list, references, and relevant work experience) and research proposal. The proposal should be no more than 4 pages, and consist of background, methodology and the significant of the project. We will discuss it with our Research Graduate School, and make a suggestion of a potential supervisor/s. However, the final decision will be based on supervisor availability and suitability.

Arts Research
The Arts Research Graduate School (ARGS) administers a wide range of doctoral programs in addition to coordinating the Arts Faculy's postgraduate research training activities.
