Security and Disarmament in the Asia Pacific (2002)

Prato Seminar

17 - 18 May 2002, Monash Centre in Prato, Italy

This briefing on regional security in the Asia Pacific has been organised by the Monash Asia Institute (Monash University) as a way of bringing together experts from the Asia-Pacific and Europe. The Monash Asia Institute inaugurated a series of security dialogues in the aftermath of nuclear tests by India and Pakistan in 1998. The first dialogue was held in Melbourne, followed by dialogues at Georgetown University in Washington DC and the Asia Society in New York (1998-1999). This security briefing in Prato, Italy, has been organised as a prelude to the third security dialogue that the Monash Asia Institute is planning for 2002/2003 in China.

The Monash Asia Institute is keen to identify academics, business and government experts, planners and commentators who are also interested in the questions of regional security in the Asia-Pacific and how security there affects global developments. The security briefing at the Monash Centre in Prato, Italy, has been organised to first examine the impact of September 11 on developments in South Asia and second, to consider the changing security scenario in China, given the emerging importance of China to the global economy.
