Overview of the Music – Conservatorium
Founded in 1965, the School has over 350 students from undergraduate to PhD level. Students are encouraged to integrate their learning in composition, ethnomusicology and musicology, performance, including professional practice/pedagogy. Students can specialise in one or more of these areas.
Undergraduate Programs and Double Degrees
The School offers sequences in:
- Bachelor of Music
- Bachelor of Arts
- Bachelor of Performing Arts degrees.
It also offers a number of double degrees:

- Bachelor of Music/Commerce
- Bachelor of Music/Education
- Bachelor of Music/Law
- Bachelor of Music/Performing Arts
Postgraduate Programs
The School also offers a Masters degree in musicology, performance and composition and the PhD in musicology and composition. There is also a Graduate Diploma of Arts in Music. The School can offer supervision of research and practical work in most areas of music. A new PhD program in Performance is currently being developed.
Teaching
A major focus of our teaching is to help students connect to the music industry and the community. It offers a wide choice of careers, for example, in composition, music technology, performance, instrumental or vocal teaching, classroom teaching, music archival work, music criticism and journalism, tertiary teaching and research careers.
Research
The School is particularly well known for its research. Between 2002 and 2007, for example, our staff produced 173 DEEWR-accredited research outcomes (including books, journal articles, CDs and software), presented 95 conference papers and won $2.1 million in competitive research grants.
Facilities
The Performing Arts Centre, which houses the School of Music, contains a recital hall, drama theatre, music technology studios, an Early Music Room, an Asian Orchestras Room and a suite of practice studios (with quality pianos).
Concerts
The School has an active program of concert performances by staff, students and visiting performers in a wide range of ensembles and musical genres. It is renowned for its lively concert and theatre life and boasts some of the best performing arts venues in Australia.
