Conference of British Music

About the Conference

The conference welcomes delegates from seven countries. Papers and lecture-recitals explore British music from the seventeenth century to the present and cover an array of subjects including forgotten composers and repertory, film music, performance practice, travelling virtuosi, and the relationship of music to the state, politics and religion.

The Conference is spread over three days and comprises the following events:

Day 1 - Friday 17 September - Papers and Conference Dinner (Morning & afternoon tea and lunch will be provided. Delegates will need to book for the Conference dinner.)

Day 2 - Saturday 18 September - Papers (morning & afternoon tea and lunch will be provided. Delegates will need to make their own arrangements for dinner)

Day 3 - Sunday 19 September - 'Music in the Round' and VIP Reception (delegates will need to make their own arrangements for all meals and refreshments).

Conference Dinner

The Conference Dinner will be held at Joe's Restaurant in the Campus Centre, Monash University, Clayton, a short stroll from the School of Music.

The menu is a two-course buffet and will include vegetarian, Halal and gluten-free dishes.

The Dinner will cost AU$45. Drinks are at bar prices.

Music in the Round

Music in the Round will feature three concerts of British music including the Australian premiere of William Hurlstone's Piano Concerto in D with Kenji Fujimura as soloist with the Monash Academy Orchestra.

People presenting papers and those attending the full conference can request a complimentary ticket to 'Music in the Round' (valued at AU$79) and an Invitation to a Monash VIP Reception on the afternoon of Sunday 19 September, hosted by the Monash Office for Advancement.

Accommodation

Delegates are to make their own arrangements for accommodation.

The following are some suggestions:

Option 1: Mannix College is a residential college of the University (which will be occupied during the conference) and is a short stroll across Wellington Road from the School of Music.

A limited number of ensuite flats (3 x 2-room and 1 x 1-room) are available for the duration of the conference, though rooms may be booked for days preceding and following the conference, depending upon availability.

If required, an extra bed can be made up in living room of the 2-room flats to accommodate one extra person.

Cost: AU$84 per night, including all meals (a meals-free option is not available). The addition of an extra person to a room is AU$28.50 per night.

Option 2: Monash University Flats, Clayton Road, Clayton
Three shared flats are available for the duration of the conference:

2 x 2-bedroom flats
1 x 3-bedroom flats

The flats range in price from AU$80.50 per night to AU$92.95 per night (not per person) and are self-catering. There are supermarkets close by.

A cleaning charge of AU$93.50 applies to all flats, to be shared amongst guests, even if the flats are not fully booked.

Delegates wishing to stay at the University Flats must contact Dr Paul Watt (by 17 August; paul.watt@monash.edu) stating whether they want to stay in a 2- or 3-bedroom flat.

Delegates should note that both men and women are likely to be placed in the flats and that bathroom facilities are shared.

Please note that the prices are subject to change.

Confirm public transport access to the University with hotel managers before you book.

Note: Monash University Clayton Campus requires a train-bus connection from the CBD and a commute time should therefore be allowed for.

Information for Presenters

Time Allocation - One hour is allocated for lecture-recitals and should contain 15 minutes for questions and discussions. Please do not talk or perform for one hour.

Thirty minutes are allocated for paper presentations but should contain ten minutes for questions and discussion. Please do not talk for 30 minutes.

Session chairs will be asked to keep all sessions strictly to schedule.

Audio-visual systems - Monash's AV system is relatively easy to use and supports both PC and Mac platforms. IT support staff will be available first thing in the mornings of both days to run presenters through the AV system. Support staff will attend the beginning of each session of papers, should problems need fixing. Session chairs are not expected to assist with AV presentations.

A laptop will be provided through which powerpoints can run. It is recommended that you have a back-up CD of sound sources.

All venues are equipped with a digital projector, CD and DVD players (please ensure DVD's are set to Region 4 or World) and a document camera.

It is assumed that presenters' laptops and software are fully functioning and do not contain viruses or improperly installed software or devices. Monash University will not be held responsible for any damage to software or hardware on equipment owned and used by third parties.

Student Prize

A cash prize of AU$250 will be paid for the best paper presented by a student.

To be eligible for the prize a copy of the text of the presentation must be emailed or posted to Dr Paul Watt (paul.watt@monash.edu) by 15 September, along with a copy of a current student ID card. (Copies of powerpoint, handouts or any other supplementary material are not required by the judges).

Part-time students and students who have dissertations under examination, and/or whose degrees have not yet been conferred, ARE eligible for the award.

Candidates will be judged on

- Clarity of topic and argument/purpose
- Fluency of delivery and responses to questions
- Effectiveness of handouts, recordings and/or powerpoints (if applicable).

Papers are not required to be accompanied by handouts, recordings and/or powerpoints as a condition of winning the prize; moreover, students who use them will not be advantaged in the judging process.

Getting to Monash’s Clayton Campus (includes a Map)

All international flights to Melbourne arrive at Melbourne Airport (aka Tullamarine Airport).

Transfers

An airport shuttle bus operates daily between the University and Melbourne Airport.

The Airport pick-up location is situated on the Ground Floor, outside the International terminal, and departs weekdays at 7:00am, 9:30am, 11:30am, 1:30pm, 3:30pm, 5:15pm, 7:15pm. These times are subject to change without notice, so please confirm all times with the vendor (see below).

The Monash drop off and pick up points are: Mannix College, Bus Loop, South East flats, Roberts Hall car park (opposite the Halls of Residence).

Fare: Approximately AU$20 per person. Group discounts are available. Large luggage items may incur a charge (e.g. surfboard, golf bags, large boxes etc.)

Office Space

The School of Music will provide an office with a PC with word processing (including power-point), internet and printing facilities for conference delegates. A booking sheet will be placed on the door (one person at a time). No charge will be made for printing or photocopying presentation-related handouts. A photocopying card will be supplied to all delegates.

The office will be open from 9.00am - 5.00pm each day of the conference.

Technology

A technician will be on hand in every session to ensure the smooth running of technology. Presenters will be scheduled to upload powerpoints and audio files (and to test them) with the School’s technician ahead of their presentations. The School will not be held responsible for any loss or damage to files or personal computer equipment.

If there is a risk your audio-visuals will not work, we suggest you provide handouts. Photocopying handouts may be done within the School free of charge.

Miscellaneous Information

Monash University’s Clayton Campus (its main Campus) is 20 kilometres from Melbourne’s CBD and we therefore strongly recommend booking accommodation at Mannix College, despite good public transport links from the CBD to Clayton.

September in Melbourne is the first month of spring. The average daily temperature is 17° celsius with an average of 5.8 hours of sunshine a day.
