Our Bachelor of Music degree provides a unique blend of subjects in performance, ethnomusicology, musicology and composition. You can elect to take subjects from other departments within the Arts Faculty - even do a double degree - but the choice is yours.
2. Flexibility of Combined Degrees
Complement a Music degree with a degree in Commerce, Education, Law or Performing Arts. Undertaking a double degree with Music is unique to Monash and is not offered by any other universities in Melbourne.

Our staff are some of the best in the business, all of whom have studied in the most prestigious Australian universities (known as the ‘Group of 8’) or at leading overseas institutions including the Royal Academy of Music in London and the Manhattan School of Music in New York.
4. Mentoring
We offer 1 on 1 instrumental teaching to develop your solo and ensemble performance skills, and later-year academic subjects comprise seminar-style teaching that allows a more personal approach to learning. Our staff are proactive in helping you develop your performance skills, composition portfolio, higher degree options and publications.
5. Performance Opportunities
We make a strong effort to give students the opportunity to perform with leading musicians. In the past our students have performed with artists including Slava Grigoryan, Ian Munro and James Morrison. Many students perform at Bennetts Lane, one of Melbourne’s leading jazz venues and at the annual ‘Music in the Round’ festival at Monash.
6. International Performance Connections
We have ongoing relationships with many international artists, ensembles and scholars. The School regularly utilises the facilities of Monash’s Study Centre in Prato, Italy, for intensive training sessions and public concerts. Staff have formed ongoing collaborations with artists in Brazil and Romania and scholars in Germany, the UK, USA and Asia.
7. Great Libraries and Unique Archives
The Music Library houses a large collection of scores, recordings, books and journals. The School is also home to the Asian Music Archive, the Australian Archive of Jewish Music and the Sumatran Music Archive. These archives are unique and are used regularly by staff and students from Monash and research institutions all over the world.
8. Global Research Networks
Our degrees have a local focus but global connections. Some of our current internationally focused research projects include a chapter in the Cambridge History of World Music and a new project on 19th-century popular music involving 6 scholars in 3 countries
9. Vibrant Postgraduate Community
Performance and Composition research postgraduates work on creative portfolios while ethnomusicology and musicology candidates explore a wide array of historical and ethnographic topics. Our Research and Writing Group is an informal and collegial forum where students and staff meet to discuss work in progress.
