Profile

Professor Jenny Hocking is Research Professor and Director of Research for the School of Humanities , Communications and Social Sciences and with the National Centre for Australian Studies. She has been involved with teaching and research in Australian Studies for many years and is a previous Director and Deputy Director of NCAS. Jenny is a member of the Executive Board of the International Australian Studies Association and a Series Editor of the Journal of Australian Studies .

Professor Hocking is the recipient of an Australian Research Council Linkage Grant (2005-2008) with the National Library of Australia and the National Archives of Australia for a biographical study of former Australian Labor Prime Minister, Gough Whitlam. In 1999, Jenny was awarded the Australian Research Council's prestigious QEII Research Fellowship (1999-2005) for her biography of Frank Hardy, published by Lothian Books in 2005, Frank Hardy: Politics Literature Life . She is the author of Terror Laws: ASIO , Counter-terrorism and the Threat to Democracy (2004); Lionel Murphy: A Political Biography (1997, 2000), and Beyond Terrorism: the Development of the Australian Security State (1993). Professor Hocking is also co-editor with Associate Professor Colleen Lewis of It's Time Again: Whitlam and Modern Labor (2003) and Counter-terrorism and the Post-Democratic State (Edward Elgar. 2007).

Jenny Hocking was awarded a Harold White Fellowship with the National Library of Australia in 2002 and is a long-standing Trustee of the Lionel Murphy Foundation which awards national and international postgraduate scholarships. Professor Hocking's biography of Gough Whitlam will be published by Melbourne University Publishing.
