Proclus' interpretation of the philosophy of Plato
Dirk Baltzly, Harold Tarrant (Newcastle) and David Runia (Uni Melbourne), ARC Large Grant 2000-2003 ($103,000)
The project seeks a new understanding of later Neoplatonism through a careful study of Proclus' interpretation of Plato and a comprehensive treatment of Neoplatonic exegesis of Plato generally. It will produce the first modern English translation of Proclus' most important commentary, that on Plato's Timaeus. This book should become a central tool for students of later Neoplatonism. Expected outcomes are:
- the translation,
- a book on Neoplatonist interpretation of Plato,
- more technical publications on matters of detail. Also
- the establishment of a special identity for Australian academics working on ancient philosophy, through the primary responsibility for a major international project.
