Three Studies in Ancient Greek Pantheism and Panpsychism

Dirk Baltzly, Monash Small Grants 2002.

Neoplatonists, Pythagoreans and Stoics all regarded the entirety of the sensible universe as a single living creature endowed with a mind. Not only was the cosmos alive, it was also a visible god. These ancient beliefs have, of course, historical interest. But beyond this, they provide an interesting contrast to modern views on what properties are criterial for being a thing with a mind or being divine. This project will produce three papers on this topic.
