Intentionality and Proper Function

Graham Oppy. Monash Arts Small Grant, 2003.

The notion of "proper function' has been asked to do ever more work in epistemology and philosophy of mind in recent times. On the one hand, the work of Ruth Millikan has launched an avalanche of work on the idea of cognitive proper function. On the other hand, the work of Alvin Plantinga has prompted close investigation of the suggestion that the notion of cognitive proper function can do serious work in the analysis of knowledge. The aim of this research project is to investigate what light can be shed on the notion of intentionality by work that gives pride of place to the notion of proper function.
