Which subjects are offered in Flex/OCL mode and over summer?

The following subjects are offered every year in Semesters 1 and 2, and over Summer. They are all offered in Flex/OCL mode.

How do I obtain my study materials?

Once you have completed your enrolment, your name will appear on our enrolment lists and we'll write to you approximately three or four weeks prior to the start of semester. You can also contact the Flexible Learning Office (contact details below) or call in to Room W905 in Building 11 (Menzies) and we'll have your study materials ready for you.

For most of the subjects listed above, there is a textbook that you'll need to purchase and these will be available from the Monash Bookshop.

Once you have your materials and any textbooks that you need, you're up and running and ready to make a start with the course.

Are there fees to pay? Are CSP places available?

For Semester 1 and 2 enrolments, CSP places are available.

For Summer semester, it is very likely that subjects on offer will attract full fees. Contact your home faculty or the Arts Faculty Coursework Office for full details.

How do I enrol? When should I enrol?

For Semesters 1 and 2, enrol as you usually do (eg. via WES ) and in the usual enrolment period. For the Philosophy subjects listed above,the deadline by which you must enrol will be extended until the end of Week 3. If your home faculty or the Arts Faculty Coursework office has any queries on this, please ask them to phone us (contact details below ).

For Summer semester, the date by which you must apply for PHL subjects will be listed here when available.If your home faculty or the Arts Faculty Coursework office has any queries about this, please ask them to contact us.

Note that it is not possible to enrol in Summer subjects via WES.

Note also that your home faculty may ask you to have an Enrolment Amendment Form approved by the School of Philosophy and Bioethics. If so, please call in to Room W905 or W925 in Building 11 (Menzies). Feel free to contact us with queries.

Are there exams for Flex/OCL subjects?

For each of the subjects listed above, an exam forms part of the assessment. For Summer semester, the exams are usually held here at Monash Clayton in February.

When does Summer semester start and end?

Summer semester officially starts in November. Introductory workshops will be held in November/December, and you're encouraged to attend. Note that once you have the study materials for your subject, you are up and running and ready to make a start with your studies.

Summer semester 08/09 ends in mid-February and exams are most likely to be scheduled in the middle of February.

Please note that the University will close for the Christmas/New Year break at the end of the day on December 23 and will re-open early in January 2009. You will be unable to contact University staff during this period.

When are lectures held? Can I get help over Summer?

Philosophy subjects offered in Flex/ OCL mode do not have timetabled contact hours. Introductory workshops will be held early in semester (whether Semester 1, 2 or Summer) and you're encouraged to attend. Additional workshops may be held if there is sufficient interest.

Please note that we will be here all through semester (including Summer but excluding the Christmas closure) and you're most welcome to phone, email or call in with any queries. Feel free to contact us and make a time to call in.

Can I do a Major via Flex/OCL Mode?

Yes, it is possible to complete a major in Philosophy via Flex/OCL mode. You would need to complete all of the subjects listed above, except PHL2850. This subject (Topics in Indian Philosophy) would need to be studied at third year level (as PHL3850) in order to have sufficient points at each year level to earn a major in Philosophy. Contact us with any queries on this.
