Postgraduate Studies in Politics

Politics at Monash University can boast expertise in most areas of the discipline. While seeing its strengths in the areas of international relations/global politics; Australian politics; political theory; and cultural and identity politics, its staff also teach and supervise in the politics of specific regions such as the US , Russia, China, South East Asia and the Middle East.

Recent appointments - Professor James Walter and Dr Paul Muldoon have both reinforced and added to this range of expertise. Monash Politics is now one of the few places in Australia with expertise in the Central Asian Republics, Islamic movements and International terrorism. It hosts a dynamic research unit on International terrorism.

Monash Politics has large undergraduate and postgraduate enrolments and its staff place great emphasis on their commitment to teaching. This teaching is underpinned by the research of staff members whose publications output ranks amongst the highest in Australian politics units. Many Monash Politics staff are also actively engaged in public debate and media commentary.

Monash Politics takes great pride in its collegial nature and its internal democratic processes. As such, it provides a friendly, welcoming and vibrant atmosphere for postgraduate students. It offers Graduate Certificates through to PhDs. Study (either full-time or part-time) can be by coursework or research.

Courses Available

Course Fees

Australian citizens and permanent residents who are undertaking coursework degrees are liable for HECS (Higher Education Contribution Scheme). All research students are normally RTS HECS exempt, ie they do not have to pay any HECS fees nor do they build up a HECS debt whilst undertaking their research. Scholarship holders are also HECS exempt. Overseas students are liable for overseas students fees, unless they have gained a scholarship which covers fees. International students can find information on courses, fees and other useful information at Monash International

Affiliations

The politics department at Monash recently won a grant which has enabled Monash University to become an associate member to the European Consortium for Political Research (ECPR ). This confers a major benefit on Monash postgraduates and staff, and is particularly relevant for those in PSI, who will now be able to attend the annual sessions of the ECPR each year without having to pay the prohibitive conference fees (of 200 pounds!). Links to information on two forthcoming ECPR conferences is now available on our Research webpages. As associate members we also receive the ECPR newsletter and the European Journal of Political research, which are held in the politics department.
