Dr Pete Lentini (BA, Political Science and Russian, University of Rhode Island 1988; PhD, Institute of Russian and East European Studies, Glasgow University 1997) is currently Deputy Head of the School of the Political and Social Inquiry, Co-Convenor of the Global Terrorism Research Unit, Convenor of the Master of Counter-Terrorism Studies program and a Senior Lecturer in Politics.

Biography

Pete grew up in Johnston, Rhode Island, USA. While pursuing his undergraduate degree at the University of Rhode Island he was a study abroad student in Scotland at Stirling University (1984-85) and Glasgow University (1986-87). Before taking up his appointment at Monash University in August 1994 he taught at the Centre for Russian and East European Studies, Birmingham University (1992-93) and the Department of Sociology, Central European University, Prague Campus (1993-94).
Publications
Pete is the editor of Elections and Political Order in Russia: The Implications of the 1993 Elections to the Federal Assembly (Budapest, New York and London: Central European University Press, 1995) and the co-editor of Regional Security in the Asia Pacific: 9/11 and After (Chelthenham and Northampton, MA: Edward Elgar, 2004).
Additionally, he has published articles on the politics of tattooing in Arena Journal and papers on media politics, post-communist politics and American ethnic and racial politics in Arena Magazine. His work on Soviet and post-communist Russian politics appears in Europe-Asia Studies, The Journal of Communist Studies and Transition Politics, The Harriman Institute Forum, Coexistence, Russian and Euro-Asian Bulletin, the Lorton Papers series on communism in transition, and East Europe Forum working papers series.
He has also authored a chapter on media politics in America in Robert Singh (ed.) Governing America: The Politics of A Divided Democracy (Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2003).
Research
Pete's main research areas include contemporary Russian and post-Soviet politics, the politics of extremism, terrorism and political violence, and identity and media politics. He also supervises Honours, Research Masters and PhD students in these and other related areas.
His current research projects include:
- Islam and Islamism: New Mediations (Funded by Monash University Grant Schemes)
- Counter-Terrorism Policing for Culturally Diverse Communities (With Dr. Sharon Pickering and Dr. Jude McCulloch) (Funded by Australian Research Council Linkage Grant Scheme, in partnership with Victorian Police Counter-Terrorism Coordination Unit). He coordinates the project's media analysis section.
Postgraduate Supervision
In 1998 Pete won the Monash Postgraduate Association's Supervisor of the Year Award. Since 2000, he has supervised or co-supervised a dozen higher degrees to completion, including 5 PhDs during 2002-2004.
