Note from the Associate Dean Research

Menzies Building

Dear Colleagues,

With the year well and truly begun, and the annual ARC Discovery applications process completed, our efforts now turn to the on-going challenge to maintain research quality and increase research productivity. The urgency of these challenges is brought into stark focus by the two big issues looming on the Federal horizon, the ERA and the Bradley report. While it is not easy to predict with any certainty the exact consequences of both processes, one thing is very clear for Monash. Our future depends on our capacity to position ourselves as a research-intensive institution, and this in turn means that research activity will be the subject of increasing scrutiny.

At the Faculty level, we are endeavouring to assist by assuring the quality of our funding applications, by facilitating research through a range of grant schemes (I urge colleagues to visit the Arts Research webpage for a list of the grant opportunities available), and by vigorously pursuing new avenues for research funding, especially in the area of cross -faculty collaboration.

Many of the opportunities that arise require an almost immediate response in which the Faculty must make a case for its capability in a designated area. In this regard, I am reliant as your representative on timely responsiveness to requests for information and participation. I would like to thank colleagues for their exceptional cooperation this far, and look forward to its continuance in the future.

Professor Pauline Nestor
Associate Dean Arts Research

Annual Research Publications Data Collection: HERDC 2009

The Faculty's auditing of the paper submissions for the HERDC has now been completed and the submissions returned to the respective school publications officers for following up. Any outstanding verification material or information will need to be collected by Friday 3 April 2009. Any publications which fail to meet the required criteria will be downgraded to category 2. Any requests to upgrade these publications and any late submissions will be dealt with on a case by case basis until the final University deadline in June

Academic authors are encouraged to cooperate with their school publications officers to ensure that as many as possible category 1 publications are submitted.

The Faculty of Arts HERDC page outlines key deadlines and responsibilities.

If you have any further queries, please contact your school publications officer or the Faculty's Research Coordinator: Stephen.Sheehan@arts.monash.edu.au or on extension - 59211

Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA)

The ERA trial has commenced with the following deadlines:

Cluster 1 - Physical, Chemical & Earth Sciences: Monash University to submit to the ARC from 1 June - 3 July 2009. Outcome to be reported back to Monash from the ARC in November 2009

Cluster 2 - Humanities & Creative Arts: Monash University to submit to the ARC from 3 - 21 August 2009. Outcome to be reported back to Monash from the ARC in December 2008

It is anticipated that all 8 clusters will be assessed in 2010 and that the process will be informed by this trial.

Research outputs from the period 1 January 2002 to 31 December 2007 will be submitted for academics on staff at Monash on the census date of 31 March 2008 and who meet the eligibility criteria, regardless of which institution/s they were affiliated with before that date. Research income and applied measures (e.g. research commercialisation income) will be submitted from the period 1 January 2005 - 31 December 2007.

The Monash ERA webpage contains links to relevant documents and sector-wide information, while the Faculty of Arts ERA page contains information on our internal process and deadlines. Schools will be advised on the process as soon as more information becomes available.

Please contact the Faculty of Arts ERA Coordinator, Dr Fiona Neilson, with queries.

Faculty Grant Schemes - 2009

New Appointees

The funding limit for the New Appointees grant is $5000. Unlike last year, in 2009 there are no teaching components involved in this grant.

There will be two deadlines for the submission of applications for this scheme:

New appointees are required to submit a research statement, setting out their three year research goals, annual targets, strategies and anticipated expenses. More information and the application form are available here.

Travel Grants

The first round of the Faculty's new travel grant scheme is now closed. Results from this round will be announced soon.

Applications for the second round for conference attendances between 1 July and 31 December are due on Friday 15 May.

Arts Researcher - Dr Shane Homan

School of English, Communications and Performance Studies

Dr Shane Homan

What are you currently researching?

I'm the Chief Investigator on an ARC grant examining how music policy is formulated and relates to the current needs of the music industries. We're looking at the construction of past and current music policy settings in Australia, New Zealand and Scotland, and their implications for changing intellectual property, production and consumption debates within the media/cultural industries.

Where has your research taken you?

I really enjoyed my time as a Visiting Research Fellow at Liverpool University in 2004, which provided a nice combination of personal and professional interests: wading through the Beatles tourist industry as a great example of how music history and nostalgia are now important to city cultural policy and revenues. Observing participants at a music club, I was once asked if I was an undercover detective about to do a raid - so much for blending into the background!

What facet of Monash University contributes most to your research?

The emphasis given at Monash to seminars and conferences to encourage interdisciplinary debate has been very helpful. I also enjoy being in a School and Faculty that makes major contributions to Australian debates about the role of the arts and culture.

What have you enjoyed the most about undertaking research in your subject area?

I have a unique opportunity to engage with industries and governments about policy and regulatory change. Its satisfying when your research can assist governments to occasionally get the bigger picture that isn't always simply about more funding assistance.

What has been the greatest challenge?

Keeping pace with the technological change in my field and the continual shifts in how music is produced, distributed and consumed. In terms of moving to Melbourne, my inability to see the AFL as the all-consuming, premier sport that it so obviously is.
