Faculty of Arts Three-Minute Thesis Competition

The Three Minute Thesis is an exciting transnational competition for HDR students from Monash Australia and Monash Malaysia. The competition hopes to provide current students with the opportunity to:

  • develop academic and research communication skills
  • share the importance and potential impact of your research with your colleagues and the broader community
  • learn about other research happening at Monash and have some fun at the same time
  • and, if you are the winner take home prize money!

Every university in Australia is participating, so make sure you don't miss out on the opportunity to get involved.

2011 Key Dates

Wednesday 15 June

Competition registration closes

27 June – 8 July

School level competitions to be conducted

Friday 22 July

Faculty of Arts 3MT competition

Tuesday 16 August

Monash 3MT final, Clayton campus

Thursday 29 September

Australia and New Zealand 3MT competition, University of Western Australia, Perth

Instructions for Entrants

  1. Register online by 15 June
  2. Registered contestants will be contacted by the faculty coordinator, Michelle Mei, with faculty event details.
  3. Prepare (and practise) your presentation. You might even want to ask your supervisor for some assistance or coaching
  4. Attend the faculty round on Friday 22 July
  5. Faculty round winners will be invited to compete for the Monash prizes at the finals on Tuesday 16 August
  6. The winners will be announced live at the finals and presented with prizes

2011 Prizes

There are numerous prizes up for grabs at both the central and faculty level.

Faculty of Arts competition:

 

·         First place winner - $250

 

Monash 3MT final competition:

  • First - $1000, and the opportunity to compete in the Australia and New Zealand competition on Thursday 29 September at The University of Western Australia, Perth.
  • Second - $500 and a certificate
  • Third - $250 and a certificate

Transnational competition

In 2011, The University of Western Australia will host the Australian and New Zealand Three Minute Thesis competition. Each participating University will send the winner of their competition to battle it out for the final prizes.

Monash will cover the cost of the airfare and one night's accommodation for our representative. The representative will be provided with a cash allowance and will need to organize their travel.

Prize money - first prize of $5000, runner-up prize of $2000 and people’s choice prize of $1000
