4.7 Confirmation of Candidature for Masters Candidates
4.7.1 Purpose of the confirmation process
Sucessful applicants for a research masters degree in the Faculty of Arts are admitted to probationary candidature in the first instance. Following a period of probation, candidates must confirm their candidature in order to continue in the degree. The purpose of the confirmation process is to:
- provide objective confirmation that the research direction is sound and the methodologies are appropriate;
- provide objective confirmation that the candidate's progress and standard of writing are satisfactory;
- provide a platform for the candidate to demonstrate their progress to date and communicate their research to a broader audience;
- provide opportunity for the candidate to benefit from independent insight and feedback on their progress and research project from a panel of experienced academics;
- provide a supportive environment to enhance the candidate's presentation skills; and
- identify and remedy any difficulties that may impede successful completion of the research project
4.7.2 Key criteria for successful confirmation of candidature
- Diligent and effective application to the research project
- Initiative consistent with the requirements of the degree
- Satisfactory progress in the research project
- Satisfactory progress in the coursework component of the degree, if applicable
