UNESCO Religious Chair

A UNESCO Chair in Intercultural and Inter-religious Relations for the Asia Pacific region has been established within the School of Political and Social Inquiry at Monash.

Sociology staff member, Professor Gary Bouma, who won this chair for Monash, said the chair would facilitate the academic study of intercultural and inter-religious relations in the Asia Pacific region with a view to influencing social policy. More information about the UNESCO Chair

Honour for promoting peace and goodwill

Political and Social Inquiry School head and sociology staff member, Professor Gary Bouma has received the Australian Intercultural Society's (AIS) Peace Award for Inter-faith Relations.

The award is in recognition of Professor Bouma's lifetime personal and professional commitment to inter-faith dialogue and promoting inter-religious respect and harmony.

Professor Bouma has researched and published widely in the area of managing religious diversity, intercultural communication and Australia's religious life. He has also held top posts with the World Conference of Religions for Peace (Australia) and the Christian Research Association.

The AIS is a Melbourne-based non-profit Muslim organisation dedicated to the promotion of intercultural dialogue and a greater interaction of communities with respect to social, educational, economic and political work. More
