Postgraduate Research in Sociology

Supervisory Expertise

Sociology theses can focus on purely theoretical issues, or students may want to combine theoretical and methodological skills (qualitative and/or qualitative) to pursue a research project of their own choice. Research experts are available to supervise in the following areas: gender relations and feminisms; population, cultural identities, globalisation and migration; religions and spiritualities; youth, the family and childhood; working life; citizenship and social movements; social institutions (prisons, schools) and public policy; the media, music and popular culture; health and sexualities.

Research Activities

Research seminars are an important part of the postgraduate experience. Students are involved in seminars within sociology itself, as well as the School of Political and Social Inquiry to help them develop a range of research skills, receive feedback on their work-in-progress and share and learn with others in the intellectual community. They are encouraged to organise and attend conferences, summer schools and enrichment programs, and to publish and present their work in a variety of forums.

Library Support

All schools and disciplines in Arts have specific subject librarians who offer specialist knowledge and assistance to undergraduate students, postgraduate students, and staff. Your subject librarian can be extremely helpful in making the most of your research experience while you are studying at Monash. The subject librarians for sociology are Sue Little (Clayton), Anna Ryan (Caulfield) and Jane Purton (Gippsland). Their contact details and other useful information on research materials available through the library can be accessed via the Monash Library sociology web-pages.

Overseas Applicants

Overseas applicants to Monash courses have to meet certain eligibility requirements before they can be enrolled. We suggest that in addition to reading the information provided below, if you are considering applying from overseas, that you also read the specific and detailed information for International Students provided by Monash International. If you are intending to make an enrolment application from overseas and have existing qualifications, but are unsure which courses you are able to apply for, you can also contact Liz Nolan in the Faculty of Arts for clarification.
